Avoiding the pleasure trap.
The cost of being addicted to pleasure is sacrificing self-fulfilment.
When you feel a strong urge for something pleasurable, you are like a person under a spell. Instead of acting on impulse, take a step back wait till the enchantment fades and you will see things as they are. Ask yourself; What are the cost of pursuing this potential pleasure? What are the consequences that may follow from acquiring or experiencing it? How will I feel about this tomorrow? If I could resist this temptation today, how will I feel about myself tomorrow?
If reason tells you a pleasure is wholesome and harmless, enjoy it in moderation. But take care not to let your happiness gradually become dependent on it. Gaining in self-possession is more satisfying than any bodily pleasure. Remember, do not seek pleasure for its own sake. The search for pleasure is a dangerous adventure.
